The second Locksmith in the ‘Interview With a Locksmith’ series is Danny, the owner of Cusworth Master Locksmiths, based in Wilmslow, Cheshire.
We are going to be asking some of our approved company locksmiths some general questions about themselves and their companies, all questions relating to the Locksmith industry in general.
So if you are already in the industry, an outsider looking in or looking to become a locksmith, hopefully, some of our member’s answers will provide an insight into the industry and maybe answer some questions you have had about locksmithing in general.
Company Name: Cusworth Master Locksmiths Ltd Website:Â https://cusworth.net/ Location: Wilmslow, Cheshire Years Trading:Â Established 2007
Career change in 1993, becoming an Apprentice, to Friend, Manchester Locksmith Chris Taylor.
I was working as a Lighting/ Sound Technician. This work has very unsocial hours.  Talking to a longstanding acquaintance, Chris Taylor, whilst he was Stage Managing an Amateur Operatic Show in Manchester, He mentioned he was looking for an apprentice – It seemed like a good idea at the time!
The industry has changed in the 20 years I have been involved in it. It is increasingly difficult to find a niche or to work independently these days.
An apprenticeship would be ideal for a youngster if you can find a company who can help. I would not recommend a 2-day course from a non MLA company. Even with good training, and experience, it is very difficult to get noticed in an already crowded marketplace.
I am proud to be a Company Member of the MLA – with regular meetings and a wealth of knowledge on tap if needed! The standard of entry requirements is very high, which helps us all in the MLA maintain to be the best of the best.
The market for domestic emergency locksmiths has been flooded over the last few years by maintenance companies and shady companies who flood the internet and printed media with big adverts.
Companies such as Yellow pages do not help by not policing the claims made by these companies.
Licensing of Locksmiths would undoubtedly help, both legitimate companies, and the end user.
None I am prepared to share!
To maintain, and hopefully slowly increase turnover.
